ChaarAppaloosa team 2025: Life, Loss, and Revival — the Journey of the Chaar Horse
High in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, where clouds kiss the earth and the wind whispers ancient songs, continues the path of our international project dedicated to the revival and preservation of the Chaar horse — a rare indigenous horse breed of Central Asia, once nearly lost, now returning thanks to the care and commitment of our team and global supporters.
This year has already brought us 17 new foals, and we expect three more. Each one is a powerful symbol of resilience, hope, and the rebirth of a breed deeply rooted in Kyrgyz nomadic horse culture. These are not just horses — they are living heritage, a vital link to the land and its history.
But this revival comes with challenges. One foal fell victim to a snow leopard, the silent predator and emblem of the highlands. Another adult mare was lost to a cliffside fall. These moments of loss remind us that working in harmony with wild mountain ecosystems requires humility and courage. Still, we move forward — because the conservation of rare horse breeds is a responsibility we carry with purpose.
Today, several of our herds roam the high plateaus of Kyrgyzstan, thriving in conditions that shaped this breed for generations — strong, free, and in tune with the rhythm of the mountains. These horses are a living expression of traditional transhumance and sustainable co-existence between humans, animals, and nature.
Soon, these same mountain trails will welcome riders from the UK, France, Canada, and the Netherlands during the first international Chaar Horse Expedition — a unique cultural and equine exchange. This is more than just horseback travel in Kyrgyzstan; it is a way to reconnect with a nomadic legacy, to witness ethical animal stewardship, and to take part in eco-tourism and sustainable travel rooted in purpose.
We’re also excited to welcome Victor, our intern from France, who will begin filming Instagram stories and equine documentary content in English and French, bringing the beauty, challenges, and everyday life of our mountain horses to audiences across the world. His work will highlight the voices, landscapes, and horses of Kyrgyzstan, using the power of social media storytelling to raise awareness.
Our project is not just about saving a breed — it’s about preserving biodiversity, reviving cultural identity, and building bridges between people and nature. In the Chaar horse, we see not only the past — but also the future. A future where sustainable tourism, rare breed conservation, and international collaboration come together on horseback, high in the mountains of Central Asia.
