Nicolas POIRIER: Together to save the Chaar horse of Central Asia

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

Chaar Appaloosa is a non-profit association dedicated to the preservation, enhancement, and promotion of the Central Asian Chaar horse and the nomadic culture that surrounds it.

The Chaar Horse

The Chaar horse is a unique breed indigenous to Central Asia, known for its distinctive spotted coat. This breed has been integral to the nomadic way of life for centuries, embodying the heritage and identity of the Kyrgyz people.

Believed to have traversed the Bering Strait during ancient glaciations, the Chaar horse eventually found its way to North America, where it became known as the Appaloosa.

These horses have evolved to thrive in the harsh climates and rugged terrains of Central Asia, contributing significantly to the region's biodiversity.

However, the survival of the Chaar horse is now threatened by habitat loss, overgrazing, competition with livestock, and interbreeding with non-native breeds. Today, dwindling herds face the real risk of extinction.

Why Preserve the Chaar Horse in Kyrgyzstan?

Protecting the Chaar horse is not only essential for preserving biodiversity but also for safeguarding the cultural heritage of the Kyrgyz people. By supporting conservation efforts, we commit to ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

Our Association's Actions

The Chaar Appaloosa association works closely with its counterpart in Kyrgyzstan, led by Munarbek Kuldanbaev, a pioneer in Chaar horse breeding.

Our efforts include providing food security for the horses during harsh winters, funding veterinary care, employing staff to protect them from predators, and monitoring their well-being in mountain meadows during summers.

We also organize communication initiatives to promote the Chaar horse, such as cultural festivals in Kyrgyzstan and upcoming events in Europe.
